From the Editor…
We’ve attended two great events since the last issue was published, the first being the Retro Classics show in Stuttgart, the second the amazing 77th Members’ Meeting, held at the legendary Goodwood circuit on the UK’s south coast. The two events were linked by the appearance of a single car: Porsche’s freshly-restored 917, chassis number 001 – the first of the line. It was first revealed at the Geneva motor show in 1969, and then made an appearance at London’s Earl’s Court motor show soon after. It was thus a mark of the respect shown by Porsche for the Retro Classics show that they chose to debut 917-001 there rather than at this year’s Geneva event, which was running at the same time.
IT WAS QUITE A SIGHT SEEING THEM HUSTLING THROUGH THE CHICANE…
We in the UK were truly honoured that Porsche should choose to give this seminal car its first public on-track airing at Goodwood, in the company of no fewer than four other 917s, including three 917/30 Can-Am warriors. It was quite a sight seeing them hustling through the chicane. Our man Delwyn Mallett was at that 1969 London motor show to witness the car’s unveiling, and also attended both Retro Classics and Goodwood to catch up with an old friend. read all about it in this issue!
